An a cappella choral arrangment of a Christmas hymn from Canada, believed to be the country’s oldest, was likely penned around 1642 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary stationed at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons. Brébeuf composed the lyrics in the Huron/Wendat language, with the original title of the song being “Jesous Ahatonhia” (“Jesus, he is born”). Its melody draws from the traditional French folk song “Une Jeune Pucelle” (“A Young Maid”).
